Messer started out as a revival of Weiss Antiqua which was originally designed by Emil Rudolf Weiß in 1928. Along with Weiss Antiqua’s signature characters, the upside-down s and S, Messer also features similar design characteristics in z, ß, 6 and 9. Compared to the original, the overall shapes have sharper edges and the Italic has less curly stroke endings. There is also a condensed display style that features an increased contrast to enhance the typographic possibilities.
